Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “önemsiz sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bağlamlanmasıyla oluşan endamsız polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit kalıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok nüshada polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). Omurga ayrım peptitlerin endamsız, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, başka amino asite devamlı, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bağlamlanır. Polipeptid örgüsına taşlıklan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid bağlamlarıyla bağlamlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Ortalama bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, kestirmece 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine taşlıklan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, hür amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin başka ucundaki hür α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
