Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “küçük sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine rabıtalanmasıyla oluşan endamsız polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit kalıntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok nüshada polipeptit zir birimi çitndırır). Ana ayırt peptitlerin endamsız, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, vesair amino asite sürekli, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle rabıtalanır. Polipeptid bünyesına sulplan amino asitlerin her biri bünyeya peptid rabıtalarıyla rabıtalanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir kez çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilindik en uzun polipeptit, kestirmece 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sulplan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, serbest amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin vesair ucundaki serbest α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
